CARLI LLOYD CRITICISES LAMINE YAMAL AFTER WORLD CUP WIN
Carli Lloyd, a former United States Women's National Team player, made comments on a US broadcast criticising Lamine Yamal's performance in the World Cup final. The match took place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, with Spain defeating Argentina. Yamal, aged 19, became the fifth-youngest player ever to win the World Cup. Spain secured victory after Enzo Fernandez was sent off during stoppage time of normal time, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute.
Lloyd claimed during the broadcast that Yamal had "never proven himself on the big stage before". When challenged on social media about this assessment, Lloyd responded: "He hasn't. What has he done so far? Until he's had years and years at the top of his game on the big stage, we can talk. He's 19." Yamal has made over 150 appearances for Barcelona and won three La Liga titles, a Copa de Rey, a World Cup and a European Championship by the age of 19.
Lloyd made 316 caps for the USWNT between 2005 and 2021. Her comments drew criticism on social media, with supporters questioning the validity of her assessment given Yamal's tournament performance and medal collection at such a young age.
