JOHN CENA EXPLAINS HEEL TURN DURING RETIREMENT TOUR
John Cena revealed the reasoning behind a heel character turn during his retirement tour in a Netflix documentary series. The turn occurred at Elimination Chamber in March 2025, when Cena attacked Cody Rhodes after their match, aligning with The Rock and Travis Scott. Cena's heel run lasted several months before concluding at Saturday Night's Main Event XLII, where he faced Gunther in his final match. WWE chief content officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque and Cena determined that the storyline required a change in direction to reach its conclusion.
Cena's retirement tour began in January 2025, marking the end of a 23-year career in professional wrestling. The heel turn represented a significant departure from Cena's established character, known for its appeal to younger audiences. Cena stated that he wanted to "ruin wrestling" with his turn, aiming to make fans lose interest in his matches rather than simply boo him. He explained the need to establish a rationale for the character shift after such a lengthy career, describing an approach centred on methodical, deliberately boring wrestling paired with arrogance and confidence.
According to the Netflix series, both Cena and Levesque recognised that the heel persona required narrative development beyond surface-level villainy. Cena's final retirement run lasted 11 months from its January 2025 start. The wrestler has since posted about major announcements on social media platform X.
