DEFENCE SECRETARY APOLOGISES FOR EARLY PRISONER RELEASE JOKE
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting apologised after remarks he made about early prisoner release were captured by a microphone during a conversation with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Justice Secretary Alex Norris. Mr Streeting suggested Mr Norris "wants to let them all out" during the exchange. Mr Streeting subsequently clarified on X that his comment referenced a joke previously shared between former Prime Minister Theresa May and Kenneth Clarke, and apologised "for any offence inadvertently caused by this moment of levity". Ms Mahmood stated there was "no ill intent" behind the "ribbing" of Mr Norris.
The remarks were made as a new Sentencing Act prepares to come into force in September. According to official figures, the legislation could result in the early release of approximately 6,000 prisoners from custody. The Act represents a significant change to sentencing policy in England and Wales.
The incident occurred as Mr Streeting continues in his role as Defence Secretary. Both Ms Mahmood and Mr Streeting moved quickly to characterise the exchange as banter rather than a serious policy statement. The government has not indicated any change to the Sentencing Act's planned implementation.
