SYDNEY CHILDCARE WORKER CHARGED WITH 329 CHILD ABUSE OFFENCES

WED 22 JUL 2026 CRIME

Hamish Tait, a 35-year-old childcare worker in Sydney, has been charged with 329 offences relating to the alleged abuse of 136 children across multiple childcare centres. The alleged abuse took place over a 16-year period from 2009 to 2025. Tait was arrested in July last year, and police applied for a court order on 13 July to publicly name him in an attempt to identify further victims. He remains in custody.

The charges against Tait include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a person engaged in a private act without consent. Australian Federal Police confirmed that Tait was employed at or visited more than 55 early years education settings across Sydney during the period in question, with the majority of incidents believed to have occurred in the city's north-west. The alleged abuse occurred at five specific settings, including four Fit Kidz childcare centres and Wild Earthlings Glenorie, a business operated by Tait himself. AFP said it had made contact with 121 families affected by the alleged offending but is attempting to locate 22 additional victims.

Police released images of distinctive clothing on Thursday to assist with victim identification, including a photograph of a puffer vest with a dinosaur pattern believed to have been taken on 26 June 2023 at a Rouse Hill childcare centre. AFP has published a website listing the centres where Tait worked to support affected families and assist investigations. AFP Acting Commander Luke Needham stated that child sexual abuse is "confronting and horrific, even more so when the alleged perpetrator is an individual trusted with the care of our youth." AFP Detective Acting Inspector Emmanuel Tsardoulias confirmed that officers had received more than 300 calls during the ongoing operation.
