J.J. WATT QUESTIONS PAT MCAFEE OVER ESPN STAFF LAYOFFS

WED 22 JUL 2026 US SPORTS

J.J. Watt made a public comment questioning Pat McAfee's role in recent staff reductions at ESPN during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. When accepting a "First Team All-Time Good Guy" award from the show, Watt remarked: "We got a slow news day over there on the ESPN airwaves, huh? … I mean, besides the fact that you're getting $100 million." McAfee responded that he did not welcome the remark, stating: "That's not funny. … We do not appreciate that."

McAfee said the comment reflected a narrative he had been subjected to following the layoffs. Multiple staff members lost their positions at ESPN, including analysts Ryan Clark and Karl Lavech, injury expert Stephania Bell, and NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, among others. McAfee stated: "We hate anytime this happens. Obviously, this is terrible." He said his show had previously been blamed for corporate reductions when it first licensed programming through ESPN. McAfee noted that his show remained partnered with ESPN and Disney going forward.

Speculation about McAfee's involvement in the layoffs surfaced after reporting indicated he was negotiating a contract extension valued at more than $60 million per year. McAfee rejected the suggestion that his compensation was connected to the staff reductions. He said of his team: "The boys and I are very proud of the work that we have done."
