FIREFIGHTERS KILLED IN BLAZE AT BORDEAUX AIRPORT
Two firefighters died whilst tackling a fire that broke out near Bordeaux Airport on Tuesday 21 July. The blaze began at a building on Avenue Roland Garros, close to the airport's car park, at approximately 2:30pm local time. French media reported the fire spread rapidly across about one hectare of land, sending large plumes of black smoke into the sky. Shifting winds created difficult conditions for crews attempting to extinguish the flames. According to reports, the firefighters became trapped by flames whilst in a truck during the initial minutes of the response.
France's Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the deaths. One report described the fire as "very violent" in dense pine forest. Flights from Bordeaux Airport were cancelled following the incident, though services resumed later with passengers advised to check flight status before travelling. The Bordeaux public prosecutor's office opened a judicial investigation with 25 investigators at the scene conducting initial inquiries to determine whether the fire was accidental or criminal in origin.
French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the firefighters on social media, extending condolences to their families and fellow firefighters. Nuñez wrote that "the Nation bows before their courage and their commitment to protecting the French people." The incident occurred as France contended with a severe heatwave that authorities said had contributed to multiple wildfires and resulted in more than 2,000 deaths to date. Firefighters were simultaneously battling a separate blaze in the Var department.
