MLS LAUNCHES WORLD CUP RECRUITMENT DRIVE AS LEAGUE TARGETS ELITE STATUS

TUE 21 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Major League Football has launched an advertising campaign featuring World Cup stars including Lionel Messi, Son Heung-min and David Beckham to attract new fans to the league. The campaign invites viewers to watch MLS's regular season and offers free tickets to new supporters. Dan Courtemanche, MLS executive vice-president, said the World Cup "has now exposed millions of people to Major League Football" and that the league would "capitalise on that momentum."

The campaign reflects MLS's ambitions to establish itself as an elite global league. The league was itself created as a legacy of the 1994 World Cup, when FIFA required the United States to establish a professional competition as part of hosting the tournament. MLS launched in 1996 with 10 teams and no purpose-built stadiums; the league now operates 30 clubs with almost as many football-specific stadiums. During the recent World Cup, broadcast ratings reached significant levels: England's last-16 win over Mexico attracted a combined 45 million viewers across English and Spanish broadcasts, whilst the US team's loss to Belgium drew over 33 million viewers on Fox alone.

MLS commissioner Don Garber stated the league is "looked at as the top, one of the top leagues commercially." The recruitment drive suggests the league intends to translate World Cup exposure into sustained attendance and viewership during the regular season. Officials have identified the tournament as a pivotal moment for MLS to establish itself among Europe's elite competitions.
