Anthony Taylor has retired from refereeing following the 2026 World Cup. The 47-year-old English official announced his decision on Tuesday, stating that "the time is now right to step aside." Taylor's final match was Spain's 1-0 victory against Portugal in the World Cup Round of 16. He has stepped down from both international and club football.

Taylor spent 16 seasons refereeing in the Premier League and two decades in professional football overall, overseeing 831 matches across his career. He officiated major fixtures including Real Madrid's win over Borussia Dortmund in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final. In his statement, Taylor described officiating at elite level as "an immense privilege" but acknowledged that "the pressure is intense, and the scrutiny is constant." He thanked his assistants Gary and Adam, his refereeing colleagues, and his family and friends for their support.

Taylor is regarded as one of English football's most respected officials and has been selected for some of the sport's highest-profile matches throughout his career. His retirement concludes a significant tenure in Premier League refereeing and marks the end of two decades spent at the professional level of the game. No details have been announced regarding what Taylor will pursue in the next phase of his career.
