GOOGLE ENDS SOFTWARE SUPPORT FOR PIXEL 6 AND 6 PRO

TUE 21 JUL 2026 MOBILE

Google has confirmed that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will no longer receive software updates beyond Android 17 QPR1, which is scheduled for release in September as part of the Pixel Drop. The devices, launched in October 2021, will reach end of life following this final update, roughly five years after their initial release. Google stated in release notes that "Pixel 6 and 6 Pro users will not be getting this OTA since the device will reach End of Life and Android 17 QPR1 beta series will be the last for these devices."

Once a device reaches end of life, it ceases to receive new features and security patches. As time passes without updates, the handset becomes increasingly vulnerable to bugs and malware attacks. Users may also experience degraded performance, with apps beginning to slow down and behave unpredictably. Whilst the phones will continue to function, Google recommends upgrading to a newer device as soon as possible.

Users with ageing Pixel 6 and 6 Pro handsets have several options available. Network operators may offer recycling schemes with potential cash returns, or third-party recycling services can be found through web searches. Alternatively, the devices can be repurposed for tasks that do not require regular software updates, such as dedicated e-readers with the Kindle app installed, dashcams when mounted in vehicles with appropriate software, or as alternative webcams for computers.
