LG MONITORS AUTO-INSTALL ADWARE ON WINDOWS 11 WITHOUT USER CONSENT
LG's Monitor App Installer is automatically installing itself on Windows 11 devices when users connect certain LG monitors, including the UltraGear model, without displaying notification or seeking permission. The installation occurs through a Windows 11 feature that allows manufacturers' apps to deploy automatically based on device metadata, provided the user has enabled Recommended Settings during Windows setup, is signed into the Microsoft Store, and has an active internet connection. Once installed, the application displays pop-up advertisements, including promotions for McAfee antivirus software. YouTube channel Gamers Nexus documented the issue following what it described as a sudden influx of user reports online, recording that McAfee advertisements appeared 31 times out of 32 system bootups during testing.
The automatic installation mechanism is documented by Microsoft as a feature available to developers, though Microsoft's own guidance acknowledges that users may find the experience "confusing and frustrating". When users install the LG Monitor App Installer deliberately from the Microsoft Store, they receive notification of the permissions the application requests, including internet access. The automatic installation bypasses this transparency entirely. User complaints about LG's app auto-installing date back to 2024 according to available reports. Dell similarly uses the automatic installation feature for its Alienware Command Centre app on Windows, though without the same level of advertisement spam that LG users have reported.
Users on Windows Pro editions can prevent the LG Monitor App Installer from auto-installing by applying a group policy setting. Windows Home edition users may disable the feature through Advanced system settings by selecting "No" on an option to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons. LG has not made a public statement regarding the complaints or the automatic installation process.
