BRISBANE WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO IDENTICAL QUADRUPLETS

TUE 21 JUL 2026

A Brisbane woman gave birth to four identical girls on 14 July at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital following a pregnancy doctors described as occurring in approximately one in 15 million cases. The babies—Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa—were delivered by caesarean section at 28 weeks and four days gestation. All four remain in the neonatal intensive care unit, where medical staff report they are doing well. The pregnancy resulted from a single fertilised egg splitting into four embryos, making the naturally conceived babies monozygotic quadruplets.

Jenitar Na'amoana, aged 34, and her husband already had four children between one and ten years old before this pregnancy. Dr Alexa Bendall, who oversaw Ms Na'amoana's care, stated she had never encountered such a case and believed it had not occurred previously in Australia, though she suggested two cases may have been recorded elsewhere globally. The pregnancy carried significant medical risk because all four babies shared a single placenta, creating potential complications for both mother and children. Ms Na'amoana was admitted to hospital at 25 weeks for close monitoring, with the medical team aiming to safely reach 28 weeks of gestation.

Dr Bendall described the successful delivery of four healthy babies at the target gestation as remarkable. One of the four girls was named Alexa in recognition of the care Dr Bendall provided throughout the pregnancy. The medical team had warned of high risk of mortality and morbidity for both the babies and Ms Na'amoana given the shared placenta arrangement.
