ANDY BURNHAM APPOINTS MILIBAND FOREIGN SECRETARY, MAHMOOD HOME SECRETARY

Andy Burnham has appointed Ed Miliband as foreign secretary and Shabana Mahmood as home secretary, according to Burnham's office on Monday. Miliband previously served as energy secretary under Keir Starmer and as leader of the Labour Party. Mahmood held the home secretary position in the previous administration. Burnham is becoming the seventh British prime minister in a decade and the fourth since 2022.

Mahmood oversaw the ban on direct action group Palestine Action during her previous tenure as home secretary and pursued harsher immigration reform policies. Burnham has stated his intention to lead the country differently and to "bring back hope" following the transition from Starmer. His administration faces what observers have described as a "colossal task" in restoring voter confidence in Labour's ability to deliver stability to the country, amid reported growing public scepticism.

The appointments represent key positions within Burnham's cabinet as he assumes office. No confirmed date for the transition has been announced in the available reports. The new prime minister's approach to foreign policy and domestic security will be shaped significantly by the priorities Miliband and Mahmood bring to their respective roles.
