SEC COMMISSIONER CONFIRMS DISCUSSIONS ON NCAA BREAKAWAY

TUE 21 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Greg Sankey, commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, confirmed that league leaders are holding discussions about the possibility of breaking away from the NCAA, according to remarks made during SEC Media Days. Sankey stated that conversations on the matter are "real" and that some conference officials have expressed frustration with current circumstances. He characterised these discussions as honest communication rather than a negotiating tactic, and indicated that remaining within the NCAA structure remains preferable to departure.

The SEC's position relates to opposition to the Protect College Sports Act, proposed by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell. The bill has divided opinion within college football: legendary Alabama coach Nick Saban testified before the Senate in support, whilst analyst Paul Finebaum has expressed scepticism about its viability. The SEC and the Big Ten conference have objected particularly to the bill's provisions regarding media rights. Sankey noted that the SEC has imposed stricter internal regulations than other conferences, including different academic eligibility and transfer restrictions.

Sankey emphasised that the SEC views breakaway as a response to structural frustrations rather than as a preferred outcome. He stated that conference leadership does not regard potential NCAA departure as a leverage point in negotiations, but rather as an expression of genuine concerns about the regulatory environment. The remarks reflect broader tension within college sports over governance and financial structures as the industry undergoes significant change.
