TRUMP REBUKES NYC MAYOR OVER NETANYAHU ARREST THREAT

MON 20 JUL 2026 CRIME

Donald Trump has publicly rejected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's statement that his administration is considering arresting Benjamin Netanyahu if the Israeli Prime Minister arrives in the city for the United Nations General Assembly in September. Trump stated on Truth Social that Netanyahu "will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America." Mamdani had said on Monday that his administration was engaged in an "active conversation" about whether to arrest Netanyahu, citing an International Criminal Court arrest warrant issued in November 2024.

The ICC warrant charges Netanyahu with war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza, specifically citing starvation as a method of warfare and intentional attacks on civilians. Mamdani told a press conference that Netanyahu is "the subject of an ICC arrest warrant" and stated that honouring such warrants is appropriate under international law, whilst also emphasising his administration would "follow our local laws." Mamdani previously said Netanyahu "belongs in the Hague" and described him as a war criminal charged by the International Criminal Court.

Trump's statement represents a direct federal intervention in the municipal question of whether New York City would enforce the ICC warrant. The former president also used his statement to call for action against Iran, stating "the only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION." The dispute highlights tensions between international law obligations, local jurisdiction and federal authority regarding Netanyahu's potential travel to the United States.
