NETFLIX COMPLETES $587M ACQUISITION OF AI FILMMAKING FIRM INTERPOSITIVE
Netflix has completed its $587 million acquisition of InterPositive, an AI filmmaking startup co-founded by actor and director Ben Affleck, according to a regulatory filing by the streaming platform. Netflix announced the deal in March. The company paid the sum in cash, according to its Form 10-Q report.
InterPositive provides filmmaking tools that use artificial intelligence to refine post-production work, including visual effects, colour grading and relighting of shots. Affleck founded the company in 2022 and has stated that the tools help filmmakers address "real-world production challenges such as missing shots, background replacements or incorrect lighting". Affleck has emphasised his aim to "protect the power of human creativity" through the platform's design. Netflix has stated that AI tools used across 300 films and television shows in 2026 produced accompanying visual elements "twice as fast and at half the cost of previous options", according to reports of the company's shareholder communications.
The acquisition signals Netflix's continued investment in artificial intelligence for content production. The deal has prompted concerns among some subscribers and industry observers about the implications for employment in post-production and visual effects departments. Netflix has faced criticism from subscribers over previous decisions to cancel shows whilst expanding AI capabilities.
