SIX NATIONS SECURE 2030 WORLD CUP SPOTS AS HOSTS

MON 20 JUL 2026 RUGBY

Six nations have already qualified for the 2030 FIFA World Cup without playing a qualifying match, as hosts of the tournament. Spain, Morocco, Portugal, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will all compete in the finals after securing automatic qualification through their hosting arrangements. The decision reflects FIFA's plan to spread the tournament across six countries on three continents for the first time in the competition's history.

The 2030 tournament will mark the centenary of the first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930. The opening three matches will take place in South America as a tribute to the tournament's origins, with Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay each hosting one game. Montevideo, which hosted the 1930 final, is expected to host a dedicated centenary ceremony. Spain, Morocco and Portugal will host the remaining matches across Europe and North Africa. The expanded 48-team format, introduced at the 2026 tournament held in the United States, has been described as a success by FIFA.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has indicated he will examine a proposal to expand the 2030 tournament to accommodate even more teams beyond the current 48-team structure. The expansion reflects the growing demand for participation in the competition. Spain won the 2026 World Cup, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final at MetLife Stadium, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute.
