FIVE FAMILY MEMBERS KILLED IN UTAH CANYON FLASH FLOOD
Five members of a Utah family died in a flash flood on Friday after heavy rainfall swept through a canyon near Bicknell in the southern part of the state. The victims were Spencer Long, a captain with Provo Fire & Rescue, his wife Katrina, and their three sons Reid, Thayne and Gage. A daughter who did not participate in the day trip survived. Law enforcement officials said the family had arrived at Sunglow campground in the scenic red rock canyon area on Friday when the flood occurred.
Deputies were called to the campground around 17:00 local time on Friday after a young male body was found in the flood wash. A further two male victims were discovered shortly after. The remaining two family members were located on Saturday, with all bodies recovered by the end of the weekend. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office attributed the deaths to flooding caused by heavy rains, though it did not initially identify the victims by name.
Provo Fire & Rescue confirmed the identities in a statement expressing grief over the loss of Captain Long and his family. Katrina Long was the co-founder of Summit Medical Spa, which released a statement mourning her death alongside her husband and three sons. A GoFundMe fundraising page was established to support the surviving daughter as she faces the loss of her entire immediate family.
