MICROSOFT ISSUES EMERGENCY PATCH FOR DELL LAPTOPS AFTER JULY UPDATE FAULTS
Microsoft deployed an emergency update to resolve problems affecting certain Dell laptops running Windows 11. The patch, designated KB5121767, addresses an incompatibility between the Intel Innovation Platform Framework driver and a new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface introduced in a June preview update. The affected Dell models include some XPS laptops and Dell Pro and Precision business notebooks. Users reported unexpected shutdowns, sluggish performance, overheating and increased battery drain on the impacted devices.
The July 2026 Windows security update had been blocked from rolling out to the affected Dell machines pending resolution of these issues. Microsoft halted the Patch Tuesday rollout for those models and released the out-of-band fix to clear the way for installation of the full July security patch. A separate hotpatch, KB5121768, was issued for Windows 11 Enterprise devices enrolled in hotpatching. The emergency patch is available as an optional update accessible through Advanced Options in the Windows Update panel.
The fix enables affected Dell devices to receive the July security updates. However, Microsoft cautioned that Windows 11 PCs from other manufacturers may automatically install the emergency patch if users have enabled the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" toggle in Windows Update settings. Users without affected Dell hardware who have this option enabled should be aware they may receive this patch despite it not being necessary for their systems.
