ANDY BURNHAM PROMISES SCOTLAND CENTRAL ROLE IN GOVERNMENT PLANS
Andy Burnham, the newly confirmed Labour Party leader and incoming Prime Minister, has promised that Scotland will be "central" to his plan to change politics and give "people real hope for the future again". Burnham is expected to make several policy announcements on Monday after he officially becomes Prime Minister. The Scottish National Party responded by stating that Scottish voters have "heard it all before", pointing to similar commitments made by Keir Starmer ahead of the 2024 General Election.
The SNP highlighted what it characterised as failures under the previous Labour Government, stating that the UK Government closed Grangemouth oil refinery, "destroyed thousands of Scottish energy jobs, blocked devolution and disrespected Scotland's right to choose our own future with independence". The Scottish Greens have separately challenged Burnham to commit to blocking new oil and gas licences in the North Sea. Reports in the past week have suggested that Burnham is set to approve drilling in the North Sea, despite Labour's election manifesto pledging not to grant further licences. Burnham has not confirmed these reports. US President Donald Trump celebrated the reported approval on his social media platform Truth Social, claiming that people in Aberdeen will be "dancing in the streets".
Writing in the Sunday Mail, Burnham stated: "People who know a place should have real power in shaping their future." He said his mission was "restoring hope and driving growth through a clear, confident, authentically Labour direction" across Scotland, from Aberdeen to Stornoway, Dumfries, Orkney and Shetland. The SNP have also called on Burnham to deliver an emergency cost of living budget to reverse what it described as damage made by the Labour Government.
