BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION TO CLOSE 87 SHOPS IN FIRST CLOSURE WAVE
The British Heart Foundation has confirmed the permanent closure of 87 shops as the first phase of a wider restructuring announced in June. The charity, which operates more than 600 stores across the UK, said it proposes closing approximately 90 branches by the end of March 2027, with the remainder of the planned 150 closures completed by March 2028. The decision follows a June announcement that the charity would shutter 150 outlets over two years. Rising operational costs and changing consumer shopping habits prompted the closures, according to the organisation.
Chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths stated that the charity faced "an exceptionally challenging trading environment" similar to most retailers. She said the changes were designed to "ensure our retail network remains strong and sustainable, contributing vital funds to power research into cardiovascular disease". The British Heart Foundation also proposed reductions in teams and functions supporting its retail operation. The charity noted that its overall financial position remained healthy, with continuing strong performance across fundraising and legacy income.
Affected staff are expected to be offered redeployment opportunities where available, with volunteers offered positions in neighbouring shops or other areas within the charity. Dr Griffiths said the organisation was grateful to colleagues and volunteers impacted by the closures and confirmed workers would receive support throughout the process. The closures affect stores in locations including Armley, Aberdare, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Bath, Blackpool and numerous other towns and cities across the UK.
