TWO EVENTING RIDERS DIE IN SEPARATE CROSS-COUNTRY ACCIDENTS

MON 20 JUL 2026

British Eventing announced the deaths of two riders following separate cross-country accidents on Saturday. Sophie Fouracre died after a fall during an event at Swalcliffe Park in Oxfordshire. Kerry Donoghue died hours later following a cross-country accident at Penrith in Cumbria. The horses involved in both incidents were examined by veterinarians and found to be uninjured.

Cross-country eventing is a discipline combining dressage, show jumping and cross-country riding over outdoor obstacles. The sport carries inherent risks, with riders navigating fixed jumps and varied terrain at speed. Both deaths occurred on the same day, representing a significant loss within the eventing community. British Eventing is the sport's governing body in Britain.

British Eventing stated it would conduct comprehensive reviews of both accidents. The organisation expressed condolences to the families and friends of Fouracre and Donoghue. No further details regarding the circumstances of either incident were provided in the announcement. The reviews are expected to examine safety protocols and event procedures.
