SWINNEY WARNS BURNHAM AGAINST REPEATING PREDECESSOR ERRORS ON SCOTLAND

SUN 19 JUL 2026 UK POLITICS

John Swinney, Scotland's First Minister, has issued a warning to Andy Burnham following Burnham's election as Labour Party leader on Friday. Swinney stated that Burnham must not "repeat the mistakes of his predecessors" and must recognise that Scottish demands for self-determination "cannot simply be wished away". Burnham is expected to become Prime Minister on Monday, succeeding Keir Starmer, who resigned two years into his tenure. Swinney said he remains "committed" to working with Burnham to improve Scottish residents' lives.

Burnham, the Makerfield MP, pledged during a June speech to "extend devolution" across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by decentralising power from Westminster. Swinney characterised this commitment as the incoming Prime Minister "playing catch-up with the public" on the issue of devolving authority away from central government. The First Minister also criticised the succession of prime ministers in recent years, describing the situation as "Groundhog Day" and stating that "seven prime ministers in just ten years" demonstrates Westminster's failure to improve people's lives. Swinney called for an end to what he described as pandering to Nigel Farage and demanded immediate policy changes on Brexit, cost of living and austerity.

Swinney extended his well-wishes to Burnham as he prepares to enter 10 Downing Street. The First Minister's statement reflects ongoing tensions between the Scottish Government and Westminster over devolved powers and constitutional matters.
