NEW YORK MAYOR EXPLORES LEGAL OPTIONS TO DETAIN NETANYAHU
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration is examining whether the city possesses the legal authority to detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his expected attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Mamdani stated he is consulting with the city's Law Department to determine what options are available under New York law. He said during a recent interview that he would act within the bounds of existing legislation, stating: "Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that's what we will do, but we won't be writing our own laws to that end."
Mamdani has said he believes Netanyahu should face trial at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, citing an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. Mamdani described Netanyahu as a "war criminal" and stated that a United Nations commission has labelled the conflict in Gaza a genocide. During his 2024 mayoral campaign, Mamdani took a more direct position, saying he would order the New York Police Department to arrest Netanyahu. His current approach represents a shift from that earlier stance, reflecting legal uncertainty about municipal authority in the matter.
Netanyahu rejected these statements during a radio interview, countering that Mamdani harbours sympathy for Hamas, the group responsible for attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023. Netanyahu stated that Mamdani condemns Israel whilst championing others, contrasting what he described as Israel's alignment with "American values" against the mayor's position. The question of whether New York City can legally detain a foreign leader attending United Nations proceedings remains unresolved.
