LANDSLIDE IN CHONGQING KILLS EIGHT, LEAVES 34 MISSING
A landslide in Pengshui County near Chongqing, China, killed at least eight people and left 34 missing on Friday morning, according to reports. Rocks and soil descended the mountainside and buried more than 10 residential buildings in the suburbs. Rescue workers pulled 10 people from the rubble and transported them to hospitals. More than 1,100 residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.
The landslide involved 635,664 square feet of material, according to officials. The largest single rock displaced measured approximately 105,944 square feet, Wang Chuanjun, head of Planning and Natural Resources in Pengshui County, stated. Heavy rainfall hampered rescue operations throughout Friday night and Saturday morning, with the area receiving approximately 8 inches of precipitation during that period. The wet conditions posed significant challenges to workers attempting to locate and extract people from beneath the debris.
China's National Development and Reform Commission allocated approximately $4.4 million in funding to assist with restoration of infrastructure and public services in the affected region. The allocation reflected central government commitment to recovery efforts in the area. Rescue operations continued as authorities worked to locate the missing persons and assess the full extent of damage to the surrounding area.
