RUSSELL REPORTS POWER UNIT PROBLEM AHEAD OF BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

SAT 18 JUL 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

George Russell qualified fourth for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, finishing 0.508 seconds behind his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who secured his sixth pole position in ten races. Russell attributed the majority of his qualifying deficit to a "serious issue" with straight-line performance that he said was linked to his power unit. The British driver reported that more than 75 per cent of his time loss occurred on the straights rather than through the corners.

Mercedes identified the root cause of Russell's struggles during practice as a setup and driving style mismatch in the medium and high-speed corners of the circuit's middle section. Russell's discomfort in those areas forced him to make steering corrections that Antonelli did not require, consuming battery energy and leaving him with reduced deployment capacity in the final third of each lap. However, after making improvements over the weekend, the team recognised a persistent straight-line deficit that remained unexplained. Russell said his focus had shifted entirely to resolving the power unit issue rather than pursuing conventional setup changes.

Russell enters the race 25 points behind Antonelli in the championship standings. The driver described the unexplained straight-line deficit as "infuriating" and stated that Mercedes were working to resolve the problem. No timeframe for a solution was provided by the team.
