DJOKOVIC PRAISES WILLIAMS' RETURN TO TENNIS AT 44

SAT 18 JUL 2026 TENNIS

Novak Djokovic has expressed support for Serena Williams' comeback to professional tennis, describing her return as "a gift" for those who love the sport. Speaking on CBS Mornings, Djokovic stated that Williams' decision to compete after time away and motherhood transcends competitive outcomes. He said the significance of her return exists independently of match results, calling it "already epic" regardless of wins or losses. Djokovic added that he had spoken with Williams personally at Wimbledon about his admiration for her efforts.

Williams, aged 44, returned to tennis last month at the HSBC Championships. According to the available reports, she has participated in two women's doubles draws and one singles draw since her return, recording a single match victory. That victory came in doubles action alongside Victoria Mboko against Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, with the pair winning 7–6, 6–2. Williams had been absent from professional tennis since 2022, when she took an indefinite hiatus.

Djokovic and Williams have maintained a warm friendship as two of tennis's most decorated players. The pair have long been subjects of speculation regarding potential mixed doubles partnership, though Williams' extended absence from 2022 onwards had appeared to end that prospect. Her unexpected return to competition has renewed discussion among fans and commentators about the possibility of the two competing together in doubles competition.
