NFL PLAYERS CAMPAIGN FOR GRASS FIELDS AS STADIUMS REVERT TO TURF
Several National Football League players have launched a campaign calling for natural grass surfaces to remain in NFL stadiums following the FIFA World Cup. The hashtag #WorthTheCost has trended on social media, with players including Caleb Williams, Cam Heyward, Zaire Franklin and Laremy Tunsil publicly advocating for grass pitches. Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen posted on X that "players are #WorthTheCost", noting that stadiums have demonstrated the feasibility of maintaining natural grass. The campaign follows reports that some stadiums have begun switching back to artificial turf as the World Cup concludes.
The NFL Players Association has urged the league to maintain natural grass fields, stating that players deserve the same standards applied to international sporting events. The union cited research collected between 2013 and 2018 showing that players sustained higher rates of injury on artificial turf compared with natural grass. According to the NFLPA's analysis, non-contact lower-body injuries occurred 28 per cent more frequently on artificial surfaces, whilst knee injuries increased by 32 per cent and foot and ankle injuries by 69 per cent. The league has historically resisted such demands. NFL field director Nick Pappas previously argued that maintaining grass for football differs from football, citing the smaller dimensions of football pitches and the greater physical demands placed on grass by American football.
The campaign reflects disagreement over whether prioritising natural grass surfaces justifies the additional maintenance costs involved. The NFLPA contended that players, who generate revenue for the league and fund stadiums through their labour, merit equivalent investment in field quality as that provided for international competitions. The outcome of the players' campaign remains unclear as stadiums continue their transition away from grass installations.
