INFANTINO UNLIKELY TO FACE IOC SANCTIONS OVER BALOGUN RULING

SAT 18 JUL 2026 OLYMPICS

Gianni Infantino is unlikely to face formal sanction from the International Olympic Committee following complaints that he breached political neutrality rules in his handling of Folarin Balogun's suspension from the United States' World Cup match against Belgium. The human rights organisation FairSquare submitted a formal complaint to the IOC this week, alleging that Infantino's discussions with Donald Trump about the ban represented a breach of IOC charter requirements for member independence. Infantino denies the allegation. IOC sources indicated to the Guardian that a formal investigation is unlikely.

The IOC charter requires its members to act independently of political and commercial interests and forbids them from accepting instructions from governments or other parties that could interfere with their freedom of action. Infantino has been an IOC member since 2020. Fifa's disciplinary committee suspended Balogun's ban for 12 months after Trump disclosed that he had telephoned Infantino requesting a review of the decision. IOC sources disclosed that the organisation is extremely reluctant to intervene in an international federation's application of its own rules, particularly when internal appeals processes remain unexhausted.

The balance of power between the IOC and Fifa has shifted significantly over two decades, with the IOC increasingly dependent on Fifa for commercial revenue and relevance among younger audiences. The 2028 summer Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles, and the IOC hopes to capitalise on the football boom in the United States generated by record World Cup ticket sales and revenue. Significantly, the IOC has not yet received complaints about the Balogun decision from Uefa or the Royal Belgium Football Federation, despite both condemning the ruling. The Belgian federation indicated it was considering an appeal to the court of arbitration for sport but has remained silent since their World Cup elimination by Spain in the quarter-finals.
