GIANT SCORPIONS ONCE ROAMED BRITAIN, STUDY FINDS

WED 03 JUN 2026 NATURE

A new study has confirmed that giant scorpions, reaching the size of Labrador dogs, lived across what is now Britain approximately 415 million years ago. Researchers identified the creatures as sea scorpions, an ancient group of aquatic arthropods. The findings place these animals in the Silurian period, one of the earliest chapters of complex animal life on Earth. The study adds Britain to the confirmed geographic range of these large prehistoric predators.

Sea scorpions, known scientifically as eurypterids, are an extinct group of chelicerate arthropods distantly related to modern horseshoe crabs and arachnids. The animals lived in shallow marine and brackish water environments. Some species within the group grew to exceptional sizes, making them among the largest arthropods ever to have existed. The fossils that informed this study were recovered from British geological deposits dating to the Silurian period.

The research contributes to the scientific understanding of megafauna distribution during the Palaeozoic era. It expands the documented presence of large eurypterid species into the British landmass. Studies of this kind help paleontologists reconstruct ancient food webs and ecosystems that predate the emergence of land vertebrates. The findings have been published as part of ongoing efforts to document prehistoric biodiversity in the British fossil record.
