US PROSECUTOR SUSPENDED OVER ALLEGED AFFAIRS WITH THREE MEN
Camille Johnston, a prosecutor from Ray County, Missouri, has been suspended from her position following allegations that she abused her role by conducting affairs with three men. Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway removed Johnston from office after the allegations emerged. A judge approved a preliminary suspension order, with the Attorney General's Office stating the conduct created "at the very least, an obvious appearance of a conflict of interest".
One of the alleged relationships involved a man identified by US media outlets as Juan David Gutierrez, who was a suspect in a sexual assault case being investigated by Johnston's office. According to court filings, Johnston allegedly travelled to Mississippi and Florida with Gutierrez whilst he was evading prosecution, and knew his whereabouts but chose not to disclose his location to authorities. The sexual assault case against Gutierrez has been postponed until at least September, having been scheduled to proceed that week. A second alleged relationship involved a Ray County lawyer with the initials "T.T.", who represented criminal defendants against charges filed by Johnston in her role as prosecutor.
The Attorney General's Office alleges Johnston's conduct demonstrates a clear conflict of interest in her prosecutorial duties. Court documents indicate Johnston was required to disqualify herself and her office from any cases involving the lawyer in question and to seek a special prosecutor. The allegations centre on Johnston's use of her official position in relation to the personal relationships.
