FORMER NASCAR CREW CHIEF CRITICISES RULES CHANGES FOR DAYTONA

FRI 17 JUL 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

NASCAR announced rule changes this week for the upcoming Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway, reducing the rear spoiler from seven inches to four inches and cutting engine horsepower from 510 to 465 horsepower. The governing body also added new aerodynamic pieces to the front of cars. The changes were introduced to address long-standing complaints from drivers and fans about poor racing on superspeedways, where vehicles typically operate at 70 per cent throttle and passing is difficult due to excessive drag generated by the cars.

Cole Pearn, who won the 2017 Cup Series championship as crew chief for Martin Truex Jr. and Furniture Row Racing, posted criticism of the new package on social media. Pearn, who departed the sport in 2019 and now operates a ski lodge in Canada, characterised the rule changes as attempts to patch problems created by fundamental flaws in the car's design. He argued that reducing the spoiler strips rear downforce, requiring a compensatory splitter at the front, whilst the horsepower reduction was necessary only because the modified car became too fast. Mark Martin, a NASCAR Hall of Famer, responded positively to Pearn's comments, stating that he appreciated Pearn's candour and noting that Pearn's position outside the sport allowed him to speak without concern for potential sanctions.

Pearn has maintained a public record of criticising the Next Generation car since leaving the sport, previously arguing that lower-level ARCA vehicles possess superior aerodynamic design compared to current Cup Series cars. According to reported comments, viewers responding to the discussion did not defend NASCAR's approach.
