COWBOYS PLACE GEORGE PICKENS ON FRANCHISE TAG

FRI 17 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens remains unsigned after the deadline to negotiate a long-term contract passed on 15 July. Pickens is the only player on a franchise tag in the National Football League this year. The Cowboys opted not to secure a multi-year deal, instead using the franchise tag mechanism to retain the player at a lower cost.

Pickens recorded 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in the previous season after the Cowboys acquired him from Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year agreement. He was absent from all voluntary training sessions during the offseason, creating uncertainty about his participation. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed doubt about whether Pickens would attend the mandatory minicamp before the player eventually joined the team. Cowboys executive Stephen Jones stated in May that no long-term contract opportunities currently exist for the wide receiver.

Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho characterised playing on the franchise tag as "a gigantic mistake" for Pickens, arguing the player had fulfilled his obligations to earn a long-term deal. Pickens publicly stated he did not object to playing under the tag, though his absence from voluntary activities suggested possible dissatisfaction. The possibility exists that Dallas will place Pickens on the franchise tag again in the following year.
