PITBULL CONCERT FORCES LITHUANIAN FOOTBALL CLUB FROM HOME

FRI 17 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

FK Kauno Zalgiris, Lithuania's most decorated team, defeated Kosovo champions Drita 4-3 on aggregate in a Champions League second qualifying round match on Tuesday, securing progression and approximately €1.7 million in prize money. The club now faces a home fixture against Faroe Islands champions KI scheduled for 28 or 29 July, followed by a second leg at their Darius and Girenas Stadium on 31 July. However, Zalgiris had previously booked a concert by US rapper Pitbull at their 15,000-capacity stadium on 31 July, creating a scheduling conflict that forces them to relocate their home fixture.

The club attempted to swap the order of the two-legged tie to play at home first, but this option proved unfeasible. The Faroe Islands observe St Olav's Day national holidays on 28 and 29 July, and another Faroese club, HB, is scheduled to play Motherwell in the Conference League second qualifying round on 30 July, placing additional strain on local policing resources. As a result, Zalgiris will most likely play their home match in Jonava, a town approximately 30 kilometres away, at a stadium with a capacity of just over 2,500 people.

Head coach Zeljko Sopic expressed frustration after the Kosovo victory, stating the team must relocate "because of a concert by some dog or somebody". Club chair Mantas Kalnietis acknowledged the conflict but noted that such concerts provide major revenue for the stadium and benefit local residents. Zalgiris' progression to the second qualifying round means a potential group-stage place awaits if they defeat KI.
