DECHAMBEAU OPENS WITH 67 AT ROYAL BIRKDALE AFTER FALDO CRITICISM

FRI 17 JUL 2026 GOLF

Bryson DeChambeau shot a first-round 67 at the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, placing him two strokes from the lead. The score came after DeChambeau had missed the cut in three consecutive major championships. Following his round, DeChambeau declined to speak to assembled media beyond providing a brief statement to tournament organisers.

Nick Faldo, a six-time major winner, had stated before the championship began that "DeChambeau has zero clue of strategy". DeChambeau has changed equipment ahead of the tournament, switching his driver and introducing new irons that he has manufactured himself. The American competes on the LIV Golf circuit, which remains focused on securing financial backing after Saudi Arabian funding is withdrawn. Reports indicate that credible backers are examining the possibility of a scaled-down LIV Golf operation from 2027 onwards.

In his official statement, DeChambeau described the round as "a hard fought battle" and noted the challenging wind conditions. He did not publicly address Faldo's remarks or elaborate beyond standard tournament commentary. Observers noted the contrast between DeChambeau's earlier willingness to engage with media and his current reluctance to discuss his performance or circumstances in detail.
