TEACHER FOUND DEAD AFTER REPORTING WORK STRESS AHEAD OF OFSTED INSPECTION

THU 16 JUL 2026 EDUCATION

Katie Allen-Gyves, a Special Educational Needs Coordinator at Cedar Mount Academy in Gorton, was found dead at her home in Sale, Trafford, following concerns she had raised about work-related stress ahead of an impending Ofsted inspection. Senior coroner Alison Mutch, presiding at Stockport Coroners' Court, recorded a verdict of tragic accidental death. Ms Mutch stated that Ms Allen-Gyves died from the toxic effects of prescribed medication combined with the sedative effects of over-the-counter medication. The coroner noted there was no indication of any intention to take her own life, and that Ms Allen-Gyves had been making Christmas plans and wrapping presents at the time.

Ms Allen-Gyves had confided in her doctor about work-related stress and reported being awake until 3am marking work. She held a position on the school's senior leadership team and also taught geography. Ms Mutch said Ms Allen-Gyves was likely attempting to manage down her prescription medication whilst simultaneously self-medicating with over-the-counter drugs in an attempt to aid sleep. The coroner characterised the combination as problematic, noting Ms Allen-Gyves was working very long hours and continuing to work after returning home whilst sleeping poorly. Ms Mutch noted it was clear the Ofsted inspection was weighing on her mind, and that she was frustrated and angry about matters at work.

Ms Allen-Gyves had previously turned her life around following a period of addiction and was receiving prescribed medication to treat opioid use disorder alongside medication for ADHD. Ms Mutch described her as clearly a very strong woman who had dealt with an awful lot in her life and had chosen to enter the teaching profession.
