BURNHAM'S CLIMATE RECORD UNDER SCRUTINY AS PM

THU 16 JUL 2026 UK POLITICS

Andy Burnham stands as Britain's next prime minister whilst facing questions over his approach to the climate crisis. Environmental campaigners and analysts note that Burnham has made limited public statements on climate policy in recent weeks. Chris Venables, an environmental campaigner and fellow at the Green Alliance thinktank, stated that Burnham has been "very quiet about the climate so far" and that he does not believe the issue is "at the forefront of his mind", though Venables added this does not necessarily signal a weakening of climate commitments.

Burnham's choice of key cabinet positions will shape the direction of climate policy under his administration. Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, has been considered for the role of chancellor of the exchequer, a move that would signal commitment to low-carbon economic growth. Reports suggest the position may instead go to Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, which some observers characterise as potentially unfavourable to climate action. Three heatwaves across the UK this year have resulted in approximately 2,700 deaths in England and Wales, damaged harvests and disrupted schools, according to reported figures.

The economic case for climate action carries urgency, according to Craig Bennett, chief executive of the Wildlife Trusts. Heatwaves in May and June caused at least £2.4bn in lost business productivity, reported figures show. Bennett stated that nature restoration and energy security solutions benefit economic growth, national security and public health. Burnham's record as former mayor of Greater Manchester offers a foundation for assessing his approach to environmental governance, observers suggest.
