DOWNING STREET REAFFIRMS FALKLAND ISLANDS SOVEREIGNTY AFTER ARGENTINA WORLD...

THU 16 JUL 2026 UK POLITICS

The UK government reaffirmed its claim to the Falkland Islands after Argentina players displayed a banner asserting their territorial claim during their World Cup semi-final victory over England. The banner, held by some Argentine players following the 2-1 defeat in Atlanta, read "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" — translating to "The Falklands are Argentine". Downing Street stated that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wished Argentina and Spain "well for the final, especially Spain", whilst adding that "the World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are".

The Falkland Islands, located in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, remain the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina dating to a 1982 conflict. A British military task force ejected Argentine forces during the 74-day war, which resulted in 255 British military deaths, three islander deaths and 649 Argentine military deaths. The prime minister's spokeswoman said self-determination rests with islanders and that the government's commitment to the territory would "never waver". She noted that potential disciplinary action against Argentina's players was a matter for Fifa, whilst echoing Foreign Office Minister Stephen Doughty's call for world football's governing body to investigate.

In 2013, Falkland Islanders voted on remaining a UK overseas territory, with 1,513 votes in favour and three against from 1,517 votes cast, on a turnout exceeding 90 per cent. Liberal Democrat MP Al Pinkerton condemned the "disgraceful scenes" in Atlanta, stating that football had been used to challenge islanders' democratic rights. Argentina faces the prospect of Fifa disciplinary action over the banner display.
