AERS LINGUS PROPOSES UP TO 500 JOB CUTS AND ROUTE CLOSURES

THU 16 JUL 2026 COMPANIES

Aer Lingus has announced plans to cut up to 500 jobs across its operations as part of a cost-reduction programme. The proposed redundancies include 290 roles at its Dublin Airport head office, 140 cabin crew positions and 70 pilot posts. The airline, which employs approximately 6,000 people, will also reduce flight capacity by 6 per cent by removing what it describes as "poor performing routes". Changes are scheduled to take effect from late September 2026 and continue through summer 2027.

Eight routes will be discontinued or converted to seasonal operations under the plan. Dublin to Denver, Minneapolis, Las Vegas and Split will cease entirely, whilst services to Seattle, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Malta will operate only during summer months. The airline will retire two A330 aircraft and four A320 aircraft from peak summer operations in 2027. Aer Lingus cited macroeconomic challenges, transatlantic competition, fuel costs and recorded first quarter 2026 losses of €103 million as reasons for the restructuring.

Chief executive Lynne Embleton stated the transformation aims to position Aer Lingus for future growth and establish it as "the airline of choice connecting Europe with North America". The airline has said it seeks to achieve an operating margin of 12–15 per cent to attract investment. Aer Lingus will conduct consultation with affected employees with a focus on reducing redundancies. Customers impacted by network changes will be contacted with options for re-accommodation or refunds, the airline stated.
