JOAO GOMES TO JOIN ASTON VILLA IN £38M DEAL FROM WOLVES

Joao Gomes is set to join Aston Villa from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a transfer worth £38m. The Brazil international has departed Wolves' training camp in Portugal and will undergo a medical on Thursday. The fee comprises an initial £34m with a further £4m payable in add-ons.

Villa moved for Gomes after selling Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m and losing midfielder Amadou Onana to injury until next year following a serious knee problem sustained while representing Belgium at the World Cup. The club is also progressing towards signing Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for over £50m, a club record fee. Atletico Madrid had expressed interest in acquiring Gomes but did not complete a transfer.

Gomes made 41 appearances for Wolves in the 2023-24 season as the club finished bottom of the Premier League. The midfielder played 130 times for Wolves overall, scoring seven goals, since his arrival from Flamengo in 2023.
