TRAIN DRIVER DIES IN BEDFORDSHIRE COLLISION AFTER PASSING RED SIGNAL

WED 15 JUL 2026

Shaun Burton, a train driver, died following a collision between two East Midlands Railway trains near Elstow, Bedford, on 19 June. His train struck the rear of a stationary EMR train, injuring 162 people; 102 of those injured required hospital treatment. An inquest heard that Burton's provisional cause of death was traumatic injuries to the brainstem and chest. The inquest has been adjourned pending the conclusion of investigations by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police.

An interim report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch indicated that Burton's train proceeded past a red signal before the collision occurred. The crash took place near Bedford railway station. The circumstances of why the signal was passed remain under investigation by the two bodies examining the incident. No conclusions have yet been reached regarding the factors that led to the train failing to stop.

The inquest will resume once the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police complete their formal investigations. The two organisations will establish the full sequence of events and any contributing factors to the collision. Their findings will inform the coroner's final determination on the cause of death. The outcome of these investigations is expected to inform rail safety practices and procedures.
