MOLLIE O'CALLAGHAN CLEARED TO COMPETE AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES

WED 15 JUL 2026 ATHLETICS

Mollie O'Callaghan, an Olympic champion swimmer from Australia, has been cleared to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow beginning 23 July, despite being advised by doctors last month to cease swimming immediately due to spinal stress fractures. Scans revealed injuries to her lumbar spine that initially placed her participation in jeopardy. Following further assessment after the Australian Swimming Trials, medical staff determined she would be fit to compete in Glasgow and at the Pan Pacific Championships, which begin in California on 12 August.

O'Callaghan has won eight Olympic medals for Australia, including five golds, and holds the title of reigning 200m freestyle world champion. She stated on Instagram that she had been told one month prior that she would be unable to compete at the Trials, Commonwealth Games or Pan Pacific Championships, and was instructed to stop swimming immediately. She described the situation as a moment that reinforced how significantly representing Australia matters to her and her desire to be part of the team.

O'Callaghan is scheduled to compete in the 100m and 200m freestyle, the 50m backstroke and mixed relay events in Glasgow. She indicated that her approach to competing "might look a little different" at these events, and committed to giving "everything I have and do my absolute best every time I race".
