THAMES WATER WARNS FUNDING TO RUN DRY BY YEAR END

WED 15 JUL 2026 ENERGY

Thames Water has warned that its funding is due to dry up by the end of the year, according to statements made as the company seeks to avert collapse through new ownership by its major lenders. The utility company has issued the warning amid a surge in customer complaints. Official figures recorded a 101 per cent increase in complaints compared with the previous period.

Thames Water supplies water and sewerage services to approximately 15 million people across London and the south-east of England. The company has faced sustained pressure on its finances and operational performance. The warning of depleted funding represents a critical juncture for the business, which has long operated within a heavily regulated framework governing water supply and environmental standards across its region.

The company is currently in discussions with its major lenders regarding a change in ownership structure to prevent financial collapse. Thames Water has not disclosed the timeline for completing such a transaction or the specific terms being negotiated. The outcome of these discussions is expected to determine whether the company can continue operating and meeting its obligations to customers and regulators.
