ICE AGENT FATALLY SHOOTS COLOMBIAN NATIONAL IN MAINE
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a Colombian national during an immigration enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday morning. ICE stated that agents were monitoring an address for a person subject to a final removal order when they attempted to stop a vehicle leaving the property at approximately 07:00 EDT. The agency said the vehicle attempted to flee and an officer discharged his weapon, fearing for public safety, striking the driver. The deceased has not been officially named by authorities pending formal identification and family notification, though local lawmakers and neighbours identified him as Joan Sebastian Guerrero.
Maine's Attorney General Aaron Frey confirmed an ICE Enforcement Removal Operations officer was involved and has been placed on leave pending investigation. Frey's initial statement indicated the subject attempted to flee in a vehicle towards the officer before being fatally shot. The Department of Homeland Security's inspector general's office is leading the investigation, according to Senator Susan Collins. Dozens of demonstrators gathered in Biddeford following the incident.
Details surrounding the officer's stated fear for public safety have not been disclosed by ICE. Senator Angus King reported receiving conflicting information from DHS chief Markwayne Mullin: initially that the deceased was the target of an arrest warrant, later that he was not the intended target. This incident marks the second fatal shooting by ICE agents involving a migrant within one week, following a separate incident in Texas.
