REGAL PRINCESS CREW MEMBER DIES AFTER FALLING OVERBOARD NEAR CANCUN
A crew member aboard the Regal Princess died after falling overboard near Cancun, Mexico. The person disappeared just before 6am on Monday off the Mexican coast whilst the vessel was en route to Cozumel. Princess Cruises, the operator, confirmed the death after initially reporting a crew member missing and launching a search and rescue operation. The identity of the deceased has not been revealed.
The Regal Princess had departed from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades on Saturday for a seven-day cruise. Passengers reported that the ship immediately began searching the area and received assistance from another cruise ship and vessels from Mexican maritime authorities. According to one passenger account, the search continued for over eight hours; another passenger account indicated the search lasted at least six hours. Captain announcements informed passengers that a crew member was unaccounted for, though no identifying details about the deceased were disclosed to those aboard.
Princess Cruises expressed condolences to the crew member's family and friends. The cruise line maintained hourly updates for passengers during the search operation and arranged counselling services. The incident prompted discussion of maritime safety procedures amongst those aboard the vessel.
