POLICE SEIZE 158,000 COUNTERFEIT FOOTBALL SHIRTS IN UK RAID

TUE 14 JUL 2026 CRIME

Police Scotland and Edinburgh's trading standards team confiscated more than 158,000 fake football shirts in an operation described as one of the largest counterfeiting raids in the UK. The seized items, weighing approximately 9 tonnes, featured kits of England, France, Spain and Scotland, and carried an estimated value of £5.5m. The operation targeted criminals attempting to exploit demand during the World Cup. The confiscated shirts will be recycled after verification of their counterfeit status by the companies that manufacture the authentic brands.

Counterfeit football kits are not produced to the same safety standards as genuine merchandise, according to trading standards officials. The fake shirts can contain harmful toxins in dyes or flammable materials and are typically of inferior quality to authentic products. The intelligence operation involved Police Scotland, the national trading standards organisation and Edinburgh council. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify the source and supply routes of the counterfeit goods, which authorities report often connect to organised crime, including human trafficking and modern slavery.

Neil Ross, Edinburgh councillor and regulatory convener, described the seizure as a "tremendous result". He stated that the operation represented a significant blow to the international counterfeit trade. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute reported that the global counterfeit and pirated goods market is valued at approximately $467bn annually, representing 2.3% of worldwide trade. The Scottish Football Association noted that it invests revenue into football programmes at all levels, from grassroots to senior international squads.
