YES SCOTLAND HANDS ACCOUNTS TO POLICE OVER SPENDING INQUIRY

TUE 14 JUL 2026

Yes Scotland, the organisation that campaigned for Scottish independence in the 2014 referendum, has submitted its full accounts to Police Scotland following a complaint about its finances. David Henry, whose concerns about Scottish National Party finances contributed to the conviction of former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, made the complaint. The allegation centres on uncertainty about how income exceeding £1.5 million was spent by the organisation.

Lawyers for Blair Jenkins, the former Yes Scotland chief executive, have rejected the allegations as false. Jenkins' solicitor Aamer Anwar stated that all income received by Yes Scotland had been fully accounted for and that the complaint represented a "grossly defamatory" misunderstanding of the organisation's financial statements. Anwar said that Peter Murrell had never had access to Yes Scotland's accounts. According to Electoral Commission figures, Yes Scotland received donations totalling more than £2.6 million during the 2014 referendum campaign and spent more than £1.4 million.

Yes Scotland Ltd, launched by former SNP leader Alex Salmond, ceased active operations after the 2014 referendum. Aamer Anwar confirmed that full audited accounts for 2013, 2014 and 2015 were provided voluntarily to Police Scotland on 13 July. Police Scotland previously stated that its inquiry into Henry's complaint remained ongoing. Henry is scheduled to meet with senior officers at Fettes Police Station in Edinburgh.
