TOM BLOMFIELD JOINS ANTHROPIC AS AI TALENT COMPETITION INTENSIFIES
Tom Blomfield, who founded Monzo, has joined Anthropic to work on the compute team, taking a leave of absence from his position as a partner at Y Combinator. Blomfield announced the move on X, stating that powerful artificial intelligence has potential to improve human life and that compute infrastructure represents a critical issue to address. He will work alongside Tom Brown, Anthropic's co-founder and chief compute officer. Anthropic, which produces the Claude AI models, overtook OpenAI this year to become the world's most valuable private AI business.
The hire represents a significant departure of British business talent to American technology firms. Blomfield is among the country's most prominent angel investors in early-stage companies, with his involvement now directed towards an American artificial intelligence laboratory rather than the British start-up ecosystem. The move reflects broader competition between major technology firms and dedicated AI companies for researchers and specialists. Recent months have seen multiple senior figures move between leading AI organisations: Andrej Karpathy, an AI researcher who co-founded OpenAI, joined Anthropic to work on model pre-training, whilst Noam Shazeer, a vice-president of engineering at Google, announced his departure to join OpenAI.
John Jumper, the Nobel prize-winning scientist who co-created AlphaFold at Google DeepMind, also joined Anthropic recently. The recruitment of such figures underlines the intensity of competition for elite talent as technology groups including Meta and Alphabet race to develop next-generation AI systems. Rishi Sunak, the former prime minister, joined Anthropic as an adviser last year, marking another notable transition between British public life and the American AI sector.
