ZELENSKYY SEEKS 300 PATRIOT MISSILES FOR WINTER, BACKS EUROPEAN SHIELD
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has welcomed an agreement with allied nations to develop Freyja, a European-backed anti-ballistic missile defence system, whilst stressing that Ukraine still requires American Patriot interceptors for the immediate period and the coming winter months. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine requires 100 Patriot missiles per month, totalling 300 for the winter. He posted that strengthening collective air defence capabilities through a winter package of missiles represents a principal method of reinforcing the allied position. The Freyja project, which originated in Ukraine, is to be developed over the next twelve months.
Ukraine and nine other countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany and France, will jointly construct the shared missile protection programme using Ukraine's experience from more than four years of conflict with Russia. Leaders met Zelenskyy for talks in Paris on Monday. The UK committed to participation in the European Union's €90 billion (£77 billion) support loan for Ukraine, enabling UK firms to supply weapons financed by the funds. Emmanuel Macron, the French president, announced a roadmap for Kyiv to acquire 16 Rafale fighter jets, with initial aircraft expected to become operational by 2028-2029, and an initial batch of new-generation SAMP/T missile defence units with accompanying missiles to be delivered within weeks.
Donald Trump has pledged Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot missiles domestically. However, the extreme technical complexity of the interceptors and the slow output of critical components from US subcontractors means domestic production remains some time away. Macron stated on Monday that a multinational force for Ukraine, to be deployed if a ceasefire occurs, will conduct exercises in neighbouring countries in the coming months to validate deployment plans and demonstrate readiness and credibility.
