MANCHESTER UNITED ABANDON EDERSON PURSUIT AFTER BRAZILIAN FAILS MEDICAL

MON 13 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Manchester United have halted their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson after the Brazilian failed a medical examination. The club had agreed the framework of the deal with Atalanta and personal terms with the player prior to the World Cup, according to reports. Michael Carrick, who is overseeing United's summer midfield overhaul, has instead prioritised other targets following the collapse of the Ederson move.

Carrick has completed the signing of Andrey Santos for an initial £48m and is pursuing Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35m. These moves represent a shift from United's earlier summer targets, which included Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Aurélien Tchouaméni. Anderson has joined Manchester City, whilst Fernandes signed for Tottenham and Tchouaméni renewed his contract at Real Madrid. The combined cost of Santos and Tielemans totals approximately £85m, considerably less than the sums rival clubs have committed to individual signings this summer.

United's transfer activity reflects broader constraints on their spending power this window. The club faces difficulty in generating funds through player sales, with Manuel Ugarte unable to be moved due to a World Cup injury and Marcus Rashford no longer subject to Barcelona's purchase option. Andre Onana, loaned to Trabzonspor, remains unsold. Carrick's recruitment strategy has increasingly focused on value-for-money options, with Tielemans available through a release clause in his Aston Villa contract at a fraction of typical midfielder valuations.
