JOE DEAN WINS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL QUALIFYING SPOT

MON 13 JUL 2026 GOLF

Joe Dean secured the final place in the 154th Open Championship after winning the inaugural Last Chance Qualifier at Royal Birkdale on Monday. The Sheffield golfer shot a two-under-par round of 68 to win by one shot, with twelve players competing for the single remaining spot in golf's oldest major. Dean sank the winning putt in front of the art deco clubhouse, qualifying for his third Open Championship. He immediately faced a practical problem: he reported that hotel accommodation in the Southport area is fully booked and joked he may need to sleep in his car or pitch a tent nearby.

Dean's performance during the qualifier demonstrated consistent play. After six straight pars, he recorded a birdie on the par-three seventh hole, making him the only competitor of the dozen to reach the turn under par. He extended his advantage with an eagle on the par-five 14th to reach three under. His recovery play proved decisive, including a bogey scramble on the par-four 13th and a bunker shot to tap-in range on the 18th. When 2025 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Aldrich Potgieter, first reserve, failed to make birdie, Dean's qualification was confirmed.

Dean's route to The Open reflects an unconventional professional path. He turned professional in 2016 and made the cut at Birkdale two years later but fell down the world rankings, combining limited playing opportunities with work as a Morrisons delivery driver. A runner-up finish at the 2024 Kenya Open prompted his return to DP World Tour competition full-time, with two top-ten finishes in his last three starts prior to the qualifier. He will play in the first two rounds alongside 2016 Open champion Henrik Stenson and American Max Homa.
